Key findings
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is set to impact, but not transform, blue-collar jobs like orderlies.
These workers are shielded from major AI disruption due to the unique nature of their tasks.
As GenAI lacks the ability to perform physical tasks, the demand for blue-collar workers may even increase with the rise of premium goods and services.
While some skills of orderlies may be automated in the future, such as information ordering and digital data processing, tasks requiring active listening, speaking, social perceptiveness, and service orientation will remain essential.
How could AI or automation replace or complement job activities?
While AI, automation, or LLMs like ChatGPT could improve certain processes, they may not fully replace Orderlies.
Tasks requiring physical assistance, emergency response, patient interaction, and critical thinking could be challenging for technology to replicate.
For instance, AI could streamline inventory management for medical supplies, but the hands-on care and communication provided by Orderlies in assisting patients with daily activities or responding to emergencies are irreplaceable.
Job description
Transports patients to different areas within the hospital using wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds. May also help with stocking supplies and cleaning equipment. Psychiatric orderlies are part of the Psychiatric Aides group.
